In 1896 on Christmas Eve the film Le Manoir du diable was released. It is considered to be the first horror film. It was directed, produced, written and also starring Georges Méliès. It also stars Jeanne d’ Alcy. The film has a running time of three minutes, by today standards not a very long film. The film is set in a medieval castle and starts when a large bat flies into the castle. The bat slowly circles flapping its grotesque wings before transforming into Mephistopheles. Then Mephistopheles produces a cauldron then we see him give rise to skeletons, ghosts, and witches from its bubbling inside. Then an underworld cavalier is beckoned then he sticks up a crucifix to force away Mephistopheles who dissolves in an explosion of smoke. The film included several conventional pantomimes elements and was deliberately intended to amuse people to a certain extent than to scare them. So go give it a watch. Stay nerdy people.
